The first 3D printer came onto the market in 1987 and made it possible for the first time to produce complex components layer by layer and significantly faster than with conventional processes. Since the turn of the millennium, the technology has been attracting increasing interest, not least due to advances in the field of biotechnology. In general, market research institutes estimate that the global market value of 3D printing across all industries is expected to rise to 43.5 billion euros by 2030 – with particularly high growth potential seen in aerospace and medical technology. Another study predicts that the global market for 3D-printed medical devices is already expected to rise to $4.9 billion by 2026, representing a growth rate of an impressive 24.5 percent.
