Animal collagen protein for the production of corneal implants

Did you know that cornea is largely composed of collagen? Collagen is an extremely significant component of the human body and accounts for about a quarter of the total amount of protein in the body.

Based on this knowledge, Swedish researchers have developed a corneal implant consisting of collagen proteins derived from pig skin. The main advantages are high availability, inexpensive extraction and the possibility of storage over a long period of time. The pilot study with 20 subjects over a period of more than two years shows promising results.

Facts at a glance

Around 12.7 million people worldwide suffer from blindness due to corneal damage or disease. To date, only a corneal transplant from a human donor offers the chance of a cure. Unfortunately, there is an enormous shortage of donations here as well, so that only one in 70 patients receives the necessary corneal transplant.
