As an independent higher federal authority of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices pursues the goal of maximizing drug and patient safety. Its tasks include approvals of medical and pharmaceutical products. Further, they strive to omtimize safety through risk assessments and evaluations of medicinal products. Another task is to strictly control the movement of narcotics and precursors. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices has 1,100 employees. To cover all technical, medical and legal areas they employ physicians, biologists, engineers, administrative staff, pharmacists, lawyers and technical assistants. The institution is part of the federal government’s departmental research institutions. Their main task is scientific research. Besides, tasks are carried out without the intention of making a profit.
