Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is the umbrella term for medical devices or medical products and their applications that are connected to the Internet by means of specific, integrated IT systems. The basis of IoMT is so-called machine-to-machine communication, which is made possible by WLAN integrated into the devices. All IoMT devices have a constant connection with a digital platform. Therefore, data collected via the device can be stored and examined. In the field of medicine, various areas of application can be found in relation to the Internet of Medical Things.

Examples would be remote patient monitoring or patient localization by smart wearables or the control of medication orders. Medical devices such as insulin pumps that transmit data or special hospital beds that are used to measure certain vital parameters also fall into the category of IoMT. In addition to reliable functionality, the greatest challenge for providers of IoMT devices is ensuring data security. IoMT solutions serve to reduce the workload of medical staff and improve the efficiency of care.
